the top 10 charms of three forks
Posted On: May 12, 2017
A half hour away from Bozeman is a charming little town that is a perfect weekend getaway for you and your family! Here are some of the charms of this “Bozeman suburb”.
1. the sacajawea hotel
The Sacajawea hotel is a historic and elegant Three Forks landmark. This charming establishment features beautiful views from the front porch and delicious food at the bar downstairs and Pompey’s Grill upstairs! It’s the perfect not-to-far getaway!

2. Three forks ponds
The trail system around the ponds is a great place to enjoy a leisurely walk and the beautiful gazebo is a great resting spot! It is also a great place to bring new fishermen as they stock the ponds with carp, bass, and panfish, little perch and bluegill!
3. Main Street
The quaint Three Forks main street is full of wonderful restaurants (including Stageline Pizza which you can buy by the slice) and a wonderful flower shop that creates stunning floral arrangements (Wildflower Designs and Gifts).
4. Grocery store
A grocery store on a list of charms? Three Forks Market is owned by the sweetest couple who are always willing to help. Sometimes the grocery store is the best part of living in a small town!
5. missouri headwaters state park
Take the trail from the pond underneath the highway and you will be at the headwaters of the Missouri where the Jefferson, Madison and Gallatin combine! This is a historic place as it is one of the discoveries of Lewis and Clark. While there, you can camp, float, hike and fish. Drop your bikes off at the park’s main picnic area and then drive to Drouillard (just north of the HWY. 287 exit) where you can enter the Jefferson with your tubes and enjoy your ride down the river while keeping an eye out for mink, muskrat, beaver, deer, waterfowl, and plenty of birds. Stop at the small whirlpool by the park for a swim and then take the paved bike path back to the put-in.
6. headwaters golf course
This beautiful 9-hole course goes around ponds and has spectacular mountain views. This is one of the few courses in Montana that is potentially open year-round due to lack of snow!
7. rodeo grounds
The Three Forks rodeo in the summer is a fun, family event that ends with a street dance on Main Street with live music and street vendors (July 14-15)!

8. lewis and clark caverns
These popular Caverns are located close to Three Forks and definitely worth the trip if you are in the area! The highly-decorated Limestone Cavern is stunning and your kids will love the Beaver Slide and an occasional bat sighting! Take your family there for the weekend and enjoy camping, hiking/ biking trails, a state-of-the-art visitor center, interpretive displays, a gift shop, food and beverage concessions, amphitheater, and exciting events during the summer months.
9. farmer's market
The Farmer’s market is a great, small social event with tons of locally grown goods! Enjoy local bacon and local Wilcoxin ice cream bars while you sit on the adorable near-by benches!
Enjoy a round of archery from 20 to 80 yards at the Canoeing House set in the Cottonwood Forest off of HWY. 287. You will be shooting at 3-D targets of deer, elk, antelope, bears, coyotes and a turkey!
